By this time, Jean had already founded Martell, a thriving cognac business renowned for its commitment to quality and craftsmanship. In 1753 Jean Martell passed away unexpectedly, leaving Rachel a widow. At the time it was almost unheard of for a woman to take over a major business, especially in the spirits industry, which was dominated by men. Instead of walking away, she took charge. She reassured Martell’s clients and partners, writing: “You will find in me the same attention and fidelity, the same economy and fairness as with my esteemed husband.” And she backed up those words with action. 

A Businesswoman Ahead of Her Time

Rachel wasn’t just keeping the business afloat—she was expanding it. She had a sharp mind for strategy and a vision that kept Martell thriving:  

• Uncompromising on quality – She refused to cut corners, famously saying, “Remember, I only want the best and without artifice.”  

• Financially savvy – She believed in saving for a rainy day, ensuring Martell remained financially secure.  

• Expanding the business – She acquired vineyards, warehouses, and land, securing Martell’s future.
