- November 2007
- Versailles, France
- As a leading patron of the Palace of Versailles until 2012, Martell & Co supported the “When Versailles was Furnished in Silver” exhibition. Opened in November 2007, this major event marked the beginning of Martell’s partnership with the Palace, itself still a byword internationally for luxury and craftsmanship. For the very first time, the solid-silver furniture inspired by the pieces created for Louis XIV were brought together in a single location. Nearly 200 pieces of silver furniture and decoration were lent and displayed in the King’s apartments for the occasion. Martell’s patronage of this exhibition was a tribute to the elegance and refinement of Louis XIV’s Versailles, to this day the epitome of the French art of living.

Martell invited her to design a concept building combining past and future, Western styles with Chinese tradition, much as Martell XO’s decanter bridges the gap between cognac’s heritage and today’s lifestyles. Zaha, whose designs are renowned for merging eastern heritage with cutting-edge, western materials and methods, subsequently selected a talented, young Chinese architect to become her protégé and complete the same inspired, creative exercise.
